Movie Reviews

Starship Troopers [1997]8.5/10 (cult) 4/10 (normal)
Utterly. Fucking. RIDICULOUS:
The movie is something I never expected. It's a gore fest, comical, politically progressive, rated-R shit show-and-a-half cluster fuck of awesomeness. Don't go into this expecting a cogent narrative, or anything of the sort. This is an absurdest movie, with the utmost of absurd characters and action sequences.

SPECTER: James Bond [2015]5/10
This film suffers from identity crisis. It doesn't know what universe it's in. It felt like a lukewarm jester's take on Jason Bourne. It's like the writers looked at how Ice cold Skyfall was and in so realizing said, "I know how to fix it!" and dumped boiling horse shit in to compensate. It didn't work.

The Martian [2015] Sci-Fi // Space

The Martian is a suspenseful, properly paced, intelligent, and well put together film that I think most everyone will enjoy. It's 2015, and we finally have the Mars/Space movie we deserve and with a proper space sideshow to boot.

Total Recall [1990]{netflix} [B+]

8.9/10

"VIOLENCE! This is a movie where things breaks, people die, and one man gets kicked in the dick over and over again. A brilliant sci-fi piece, and instant classic. Quite literally (no sarcasm or hyperbole) the list of things in this movie that didn't break or explode is shorter than the list of things that did!"

Star Trek [2]: Wrath of Khan [1982] // Sci-Fi [B]

8.5/10
"This is hailed as the best Star Trek flick (of the old ones) by many of the 'experts'. It just now occurred to me that I qualify as just that. I've quite literally scene every episode of the old Trek and TNG. I might not be as read into the lore as some trekkies, but I do know what makes a good film."

Die. Repeat (Edge of Tomorrow) [2014] -- Sci-Fi, Action [ B ]

8/10
"It was basically a cross between Battle L.A and Groundhogs day. It's fucking awesome."

Sucker Punch [2011] -- Action// SciFi // Fantasy [D+]

5.9/10
"I would recommend this movie to anyone who lives fast paced, jaw dropping action sequences, and cares fuck all about story. If you're into hot girl's with guns, this is the movie for you!"

7.0/10
"Prometheus is a reboot prequel-that-isn't-a-prequel-we-swear-but-we're-going-to-hype-it-that-way-anyway-in-a-desperate-attempt-to-break-even-on-our-grossly-overblown-budget-because-we-know-this-movie-has-nothing-else-going-for-it" to Ridely Scott's Alien. The movie is still gorgeous to watch. That's about it. It's pretty."

This movie was intense. It's beautiful. If you didn't see in theaters, I'm sorry.

Chronicle [2012] Action // Sci-Fi [B]

8.3/10
"Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over. -- (C) Official Site"

DRAMA

The Good Sheppard [2006] -- Drama // Crime // CIA [C]

Stars: 7.9 (really, it's probably like a 6.0)
Personally, I am heavily bias for this movie. As many of you might know, I'm a huge history buff when it comes to the CIA and the Cold War.
"This is the type of film that unless you lived it, studied it, or you're high as balls and don't care, you just wont enjoy. Don't let me deter you, if you've got the mind for it by all means watch it... but with a grain of salt that it's more a character study than a dramatic story of the CIA."

Take Shelter [2011] Drama [A+]

Stars: 9.3
"Powerful. Gripping. Suspenseful. Immersive. Compelling. These are just some of the words I would use to describe this master piece. A strange mix of fantastical cinematography, Take Shelter comes together with a subtly not often found in modern cinema. Culminating in one of the most memorable and emotionally evoking drama I have witnessed this century."

Legends of the Fall [1994] Drama, Romantic Movie {Netflix}

Grade: C-
Stars: 6.5

"It's a movie that shot for the stars and burnt up on reentry. It's a melodramatic smorgasbord of improperly paced and overreaching plot arcs. It felt like an entire first season of Dowton Abbey being broken down into pieces and slammed together into just over two hours. Everything but the thematic portrayal worked. Visually stunning, great acting, but in no way was the movie compelling or captivating--the two most important parts of a drama/romance."

The American [2010] // Drama // Failed-Thriller [ D ]

Stars: 4.0
"It is literally a movie. That's it."

Gone Baby Gone (2007) -- Drama // Crime [A-]

Stars: 9.0
"I would recommend this movie to just about anyone who enjoys fine cinema and fantastic writing & directing. This movie will take your breath away, make your heart stop, make your head spin, and make your stomach churn."

Django Unchained [2012] Comedy // Action // Period Piece {Netflix} [B+]

8.6/10

"A violent and bloody satisfying film through and through. Not explicitly a comedy, it delivers tastefully the stark realty of American slave history while still managing to poke fun at the past. It is both a profoundly honest portrayal of human depravity, and a hilarious absurdity can only be described as an emotional roller coaster. This film does little to sugarcoat reality, and goes so far as to characterize in absurdest fashion at every applicable opportunity. With compelling characters and an equally compelling plot, this film accomplishes just about everything it sets out to and does so brilliantly."

Let The Right One In [2008] -- Vampire // Psychological-Chiller // Drama [B+]

8.7/10
"A dark and realistic take on a vampire movie. It's subtly is key."

 6.5/10
"I would recommend this movie to those who already love Tim Burton or Johnny Depp. That's really about it."

Byzantium (2011) -- Vampire / Drama [C-]

6.5/10
"I would recommend this movie, but only to vampire lovers. It's great for a rainy day, but unfortunately falls short of anything profound, despite its tone."

X-Men First Class [2011] -- Action // Superhero [C-]

6.0/10
Alright, so this movie was a reboot / prequel to the X-Men trilogy (Not the Wolverine spin off).
"There is nothing profound or ground breaking about it. It shot low and hit lower."

Shutter Island [2010] -- Mystery // Chiller // Crime
7.5/10
Shutter Island is a movie about a detective who is tasked with investigating a murder on an Island for the mentally insane.
"This movie is DARK. It's CREEPY and it's fucking tense. Look at the name...I mean, it will give you shutters. It feels extremely similar to the first act of King Kong.[...]although not flawless, was pretty decent. This is the type of movie you need to watch twice, and it's worth it."

Blue Ruin [2013] -- Independent // Chiller {NetFlix}

9.1/10

"The directing style of Blue Ruin is akin to lighting a candle with a match, while most other 'major block buster' films in the same genre and category go straight for the flame thrower. . . A slow burn the entire way, the movie reaches a fever pitch quite quickly and culminates in a blood curdling and heart stopping ride that takes hold, and doesn't let go until it's over."

SHOWS:

Drama, Crime
This is a show about Pablo Escobar. It feels like an HBO series, which isn't saying it's good one way or the other. Although I think this show can be a bit out of scope and overwhelming with the tangent plots, the core plot and characters are fantastically realized.

Cyberpunk, Anime, Futurism
This show seems to be the younger sister of Ghost in the Shell. It's not as realized or actualized, but that doesn't diminish the fun and truthfully they shouldn't be compared but for the genre. I was impressed and entertained.

Penny Dreadful [2014-]
Fantasy, Drama, Romance, Period piece, Demons spirits vampires all that.
Penny Dreadful is a show with some serious flaws that are made up for by some seriously strong points. There is nothing fatally wrong with this series, but it does suffer from a lack of cogent meaning and character arc. Everything just feels pointless. But don't let that deter you. Weak character arcs are certainly overlooked with the action and acting!
