Shutter Island is a Mystery movie about a detective who is tasked with investigating a murder on an Island for the mentally insane.
Shutter Island [2011]
Shutter Island is a very dark and brooding movie that keeps true to it's genre. It suffers from some fatal flaws, but it does accomplish a lot. I sets out exactly what it aims to do, but in a bit of a roundabout way.
Obviously, just looking at the cast, the acting is top notch. Although the story can be a bit confusing, I haven't really decided if that was a result of poor directing, poor editing, or a purposely omitting or obscuring important "hints" of information.
This movie aims to be a mystery and does so better than most. It doesn't pull that weak bullshit like we got from Sherlock Holmes (2009), where the audience has ostensibly zero chance of actually piecing that clusterfuck together. Shutter Island drops hints, some more subtle than others, and keeps the plot moving in increasingly abstract directions.
True to its very name, Shutter Island is dark, creepy, and tense. I think in terms of tone, King Kong's first act was the most similar. It's not supposed to be a horror movie, and doesn't aim for cheap scares or shocks. It'll make your neck hairs stand up, not your stomach churn. There is something strangely surreal about it. The lighting and cinematography, even the setting (real world set) all serve to reinforce this.
It's good, bordering on great, and certainly worth the watch if you're into these type of dark flicks.
