Crafting Emotional Structure: Studying Creative Writing Through Study of Other Art Forms.

Anyone who takes writing seriously should expand their mind into different creative outlets, even if they're pressed for time (and I doubt that's the truth). Freud and probably some hipster yoga instructor somewhere would say it has to do with sex. We naturally like the same structure again and again, with subtle variants. This is evident in new-age Electronic music. Build build build climax slow down build build BIGGER climax etc . . It is universal something humans like. It's probably more meat-sack than man.

Porter Robinson hits this with both visual and sound. Seriously, check this out:

For me, I write a lot of poetry and lyrics. Others do performance art, create music, which like writing most of it is fucking atrocious [looking at you Ms. Spagetti-O cooter girl] I suggest practicing poetry with story writing and drawing some pictures (not so much taking them--that's a bit different).

Art and writing to me are one in the same.

Shadows in movies to que the tone and mood.

Blues are complemented by oranges in painting.

Melodies and beats go together. (I think I'd make music like Shpongle if I had the wherewithal)

Tragedy and Romance balance, but tragedy is darker and can easily overshadow. It's why Romeo & Juliette is the floor or the ceiling depending on which way you look at it. The balance is perfect. Country and Dubstep generally don't mix. Somethings in literature also don't mix. Knowing these things helps to balance story structure. It can help you find motif and give greater depth to your characters.

Find yourself a second form of art, even if you suck terribly. Start thinking deeper :)

  1. Interesting. Writing fiction is sort of a secondary art-form for me, after 15+ years of writing/producing/playing music (at some points even in a professional capacity). Lately i've been trying to structure stories and outlines with songwriting in mind. Verses and Choruses and Bridges and Hooks and Slight Variations here and there. I'm finding them both much more relevant to each other than i anticipated.
