The 100 [2014], Season 1 Review Sci-Fi // Adventure // Teen Crap

The 100 (Season 1) is a sci-fi + jungle adventure show thinly disguised as "post apocalyptic" with characters about as trite and predictable (not to mention vapid) as can be expected from a teen drama that basically rips the scripts from LOST and Hunger Games verbatim. Basically, this show is utter trash, but I still found myself intrigued enough by the relatively high production value. Honestly, I will watch Season 2, though I;m not going to seek it out online or anything. If Netflix never has it I'm never gonna see it.
13 episodes? Oy vey. This could just as easily have been a movie. In fact, this should never have been made. The 100 or should I say "LOST with winy teens" is an amusing little show that follows the utmost of trite characters through the 2spooky4u world of "Earth after WW3". Truth be told, though I skipped a few episodes somewhere in the middle, I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic, so I was willing to overlook the teen-drama garbage and actually stomach out more than >50% of the episodes.

Honestly? It was actually quite well done given what it was and what it wasn't supposed to be. The production value falls somewhere on the higher end of standard, and the plot....well, the plot is what can be expected from a teen drama meets LOST meets After Earth [2013].

FADE IN: We start off with a pretty standard introduction, rushing you into the action and blowing past what is (seemingly) really important so that it can be revisited in retrospect later. Unlike Terra Nova (amazing!), another futurism show set in the later part of the 22nd or 23rd century this show doesn't feel nearly as cohesive and the plot arcs feel stunted at best. Cliche after cliche. Unfortunately, most of these plot hooks were left baited and never touched again--though I can't really say that upset me given how many awful ones they left.

There are at least three major plot lines for this show, including 1 (that I found more interesting) that takes place in space. It's basically just the standard moral check, but the acting is a much higher caliber than the C-grade-actor teens "down on Earth".

* The girl on the ground. Blondey is basically JACK from LOST meets Cactus Aburdine (or whatever Hunger Games girl, you know) and goes around doing that stuff. That's it. No more no less. Pretty lame honestly.

* Desmond from LOST, IN SPACE! This is my favorite plot line because it gets political. It's still super trite, but that can be overlooked because honestly the CG and set designs are really top notch. The space center is certainly the best part of the series by far.

* The rest of the crap. And that's what it is. Crap. Honestly, I found myself skipping episode after episode because I just didn't give a crap about the flimsy teen bullshit or the spooky OTHERS FROM LOST (aka "Grounders).

Towards the end of the first season, things do get interesting, but it just seemed like the entire show to get there was a drag. I say it gets interesting because we reach a paradigm shift which realistically, I don't know how the writers are going to retract from and once we've gone this far, it's not the same show. It's not "LOST" anymore -- It's just whatever nonsense they throw in. It can be whatever they want.

I know it sounds like I'm really hating on this, but ironically I would give it decent reviews given what it is. I really dislike cliche writing and I really dislike teen dramas.
