[Over Thinking Things]: "The Second Dot.."

Not: Yeah.

Not: Yeah...

But: Yeah..

So what the hell does that awkward second dot mean? It irks us. It's the type of subtle thing that never really existed in our language until cellphone culture took over. I'm not knocking it, I just don't understand it. And perhaps that's the key. It's ambiguous. We don't have a mental frame work to understand it. Most can infer the meaning in the following situations:

Guy: Hey you free?
Girl: Yeah :)
Guy: Cool!

Clearly this chick is DTF, right? Let's try again.

Girl: Hey you free?
Guy: Yeah...
Girl: ...what :/

We brace for the impact. We know something more is coming and we know it's probably not good. It's a "We need to talk". It's scary and we don't like it.

But what the hell is this?

Guy: You free to hang again?:
Girl: yeah..
Guy: ???????

Actually in that last scenario the girl/guy thing doesn't actually matter. Is it a typo? Is it dismissive? Are they purposely confusing us? Is it something more to say? Why didn't they just use 1 dot? Does that second dot actually mean something? Should it? Am I over thinking things?

The second dot is a new phenomena I've observed in action many times and probably used myself a few times. It's not something everyone would notice, it's subtle...it's just a fucking dot. But that dot means a lot by meaning nothing, and that annoys us.
